Today we drove around 300 miles to Penzance, Cornwall. It was a long, roundabout filled ride, but to see the breathtaking countryside and to arrive to a buzzing town festival was well worth it.
The Golowan festival is also known as Mazey Day. Golowan is Cornish for midsummer and the celebrations occurs over several days. The streets were closed off and people were everywhere! Food, vendors, a parade, rides galore and lots of people drinking made for an interesting and lively event. Sort of made us think of Mardi Gras. We walked all around the city center and grabbed a pasty for lunch. Delicious and handy!
Due to the festival, parking near our hotel was difficult to find. We stopped in to meet Stephen the friendly inn keeper. He showed us to our room, another view of the ocean, and filled us in on the town. After that, we decided to go exploring. We drove to Newlyn, and then decided to drive to Lands End. Dad needed some polos and khakis, but instead we found amazing cliffs and ocean views. We hiked all around, climbing on the rocks and looking down to the ocean below. We even saw some people camping on the cliffs and others climbing them! Some of the spots reminded me of the final beach scene in Goonies, you know the one where they find the jewels in the marble bag.
Anywho, after that we decided to head home and try to find a spot to park. Well, low and behold on our way out of Lands End, what did we see? The Rutland Chapter of a motorcycle club! We asked if we could take a picture of the women's jacket and then had a nice little chat. What are the odds that Rutlanders from different sides of the Atlantic would meet up?!? Shortly afterwards, we got back on the winding road and made our way back to Penzance. We did a little more walking around the town before heading back to the guest house to tuck in for the night.
